Body and Mind: bridging the gap in midlife

“In midlife, Body and Mind don’t speak the same language.” – Me, just now.

Lately, I’ve noticed a major disconnect between Body and Mind. I’m not sure when it happened, but it seems like the two have gone their separate ways and aren’t on speaking terms anymore. If you’re navigating midlife too, you might be feeling this tension between mental and physical wellbeing, and it’s not unusual. Let’s unpack this awkward phase and see what we can do about it.

Body, that fickle friend

Body has become this stubborn, grumpy old beast, ignoring Mind’s attempts to communicate. Poor Mind is still under the impression she can knock out a 10K in 50 minutes, while Body, now older and wearier, responds with two solid weeks of pain if we even attempt a jog. And as if that’s not enough, Body has taken her newfound obstinance to a whole new level …

Bunny hop a fence? Nope. Snap a hamstring. Nice.

Meanwhile, Mind keeps going strong (well, aside from that low-level mood disorder). But Body has softened, becoming so touchy that she can’t even sit through an eight-hour workday without delivering a nice, persistent burn between the shoulder blades. All. Day. Long. Yep, Body can be a real diva.

A history of hard times

But to be fair, it’s not all Body’s fault. She’s been through the wringer. Years of binge-drinking, over-exercising, under-exercising, junk food binges, smoking, all-nighters, too much sun, too little water – you name it. It’s no wonder Body’s had enough.

She’s actually been incredibly loyal, going along with every hare-brained scheme Mind could concoct. After all, she’s the one who endured those races, triathlons, mountain hikes, and rollercoaster weight swings. She’s been an unsung hero, putting up with all the wear and tear Mind threw at her. No surprise she now prefers yoga to running, Netflix over late nights, and water instead of vodka.

Still a fan of coffee and sex, though. #legend

Who’s really the enemy?

Spoiler alert: Body’s not the villain here. Not even close.

With a bit more maturity and reflection, I can see now that Body’s the wise one in this dynamic duo. She’s dealt with all of my recklessness, built and birthed a human being, and kept me moving through everything life has thrown at us.

A promise to Body and Mind in midlife

Body, I’m sorry for not appreciating you sooner, for blaming you when you’ve had enough, and for pushing you too hard. I vow to take better care of you.

  • I’ll work your muscles and joints.
  • I’ll nourish you with real food.
  • I’ll keep you hydrated.
  • I’ll listen to what you’re telling me.
  • I’ll stretch you (if I must).

Mind, you’re not off the hook either. You were young and didn’t know any better. But now that you do, let’s work together.

  • I’ll look for the joy in each day.
  • I’ll thank you and Body for all you can still do.
  • I’ll wholeheartedly embrace calm and quiet in meditation.
  • I’ll speak kindly to you.

What about you?

Midlife might have thrown Body and Mind into an awkward phase, but it’s also a chance to reintroduce them.

How will you care for your Mind and Body today?

Try this: Pause for a moment to check in. What do they need right now – a walk, a stretch, a glass of water, or even just a moment to breathe? Start there, and let’s figure this out together.
