February yoga update: hotel carpets and sleepy mornings

Em holds a Triangle pose for her February Yoga Update. It forms part of the Moon Salute, but she's doing it during the day for photography reasons.
A little Triangle action in my Moon Salute for this February yoga update.

The opening stretch

Welcome to my February yoga update. This month, my yoga practice went on tour – two work trips and a personal trip to Hobart meant a lot of hotel-room yoga. Unfortunately, travel also took a toll on my energy levels, and my consistency took a hit. Mornings felt harder, evenings disappeared in a blur of exhaustion, and dragging myself out of bed was more of a challenge than any yoga pose. But even when I wasn’t feeling it, I tried to squeeze in a little movement where I could. Some months are about progress; this one was about persistence.

February yoga update – pose progress check-in

With energy in short supply, I kept things simple: sun salutations in the morning and moon salutations before bed. Just basic, familiar movements – nothing ambitious, just a way to reconnect with my body. One thing I didn’t do, though? Bring my yoga mat. And let me tell you, hotel room carpets are not the ideal surface for a down dog. Lesson learned: next time, the mat comes with me. Even if it means schlepping around a big piece of rubber, my knees and wrists will thank me and I won’t be slipping on any icky hotel room carpet.

You can see my hotel room flow (sounds wrong) … on my Instagram page.

Milestones and micro-victories

While I didn’t have any major breakthroughs this month, at least I didn’t have any injuries (I’m looking at you, January).

I did stumble across a small but valuable tip: in downward dog, if I can’t get my heels flat on the ground without rounding my back, I should be bending my knees and stretching through my shoulders instead. I always assumed that forcing my heels down was the goal, but turns out, prioritising alignment is more important. It’s a small tweak, but it’s already making my downward dog feel better – less forced, more fluid.

The stretch ahead – March goals

March’s goal is simple: two rounds of morning and evening salutations, no excuses. Even if that’s all I manage, it’s still movement, still a win. And beyond that, I need to stop treating my alarm clock like an optional suggestion. No more negotiating for ‘just five more minutes’ – I want to start my days with a stretch, not a snooze button showdown.

Final bow

If there’s one thing this month has taught me, it’s that the journey is definitely more important than the destination. Because honestly? Right now, the destination feels further away than when I started. But showing up, even imperfectly, still counts. Some months are about big wins – this one was about hanging in there. And that’s enough.

Here’s to a progress-filled March!
