- Author: Chris Hammer
- Genre: Crime/Mystery

- Where I read it: In bed. (It’s where I read.)
First things first: I thought The Tilt was Book 1 in this series. It’s not. It’s Book 2.
So, The Seven is Book 3. And I’ve read them out of order because I blindly trusted my mum who handed me The Tilt and said, “Start with this one.”
Look, she feeds me when I visit, and she loves me unconditionally. But clearly, her version of the Dewey Decimal system is pure anarchy.
Still, The Seven more than holds its own – even out of order.
So, what’s The Seven about?
Set in the fictional town of Yuwonderie, The Seven drops us back into the lives of detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan. This time, they’re investigating the death of a wealthy landowner – a death with roots tangled deep in Australia’s political, financial, and historical undergrowth.
Expect:
- Small-town secrets with big-city consequences
- Corruption, cover-ups, and corporate creepiness
- Decades-old murders that refuse to stay buried
- Atmospheric writing that feels like sticky summer air and long-held grudges
- A story that spans generations
It’s layered, gritty, and full of Chris Hammer’s signature slow-burn tension – the kind that doesn’t scream thriller so much as tighten gradually around your throat like a clever, quiet snake.
Can you read it as a standalone?
Yep. You sure can.
The Seven is the third book featuring Lucic and Buchanan, but Hammer does a solid job of giving you just enough backstory to ground you, without bogging things down. You won’t get all the nuances of their working relationship or personal histories, but you won’t be lost, either.
There are a few references to past investigations, and if you’ve read The Tilt, you’ll catch some satisfying threads – but it’s not essential homework. Think of it like arriving at a party where everyone kind of knows each other already, but they’re still happy to pour you a drink and fill you in on the gossip.
If you are the kind of reader who likes to read in order, fair warning: if you read this before The Tilt, you’ll get some spoilers just by virtue of character continuity. But if you’re like me – trusting your mum and diving in mid-series – you’ll still have a great time.
Just maybe go back and catch Book 1 (Treasure & Dirt) when you get a chance. That is my plan … Mum’s on notice!
Final thoughts:
This one’s darker and more cerebral than The Tilt, with more political edge and a heavier dose of moral ambiguity. It’s less about action, more about power and consequence – which feels incredibly on brand for this current chapter of the human experience, to be honest.
Would I recommend it?
Oh, yes – especially if you like your crime fiction thoughtful, layered, and unapologetically Australian.
Will I ever trust Wendy’s series-order logic again? No. But I will absolutely keep raiding her bookshelf … she has excellent literary taste!

And stay tuned for future instalments from Wendy’s Bookshelf, where I read whatever she hands me – and then tell you all about it, in the correct or incorrect order.
