What is real self-care? (It’s more than bubble baths)

When people say “self-care,” it usually conjures up something like candles, wine, and a glorified soak in the tub. And look, no judgement – if you love a bath ritual, keep living your best eucalyptus-scented life.

But let’s get one thing straight: if your entire self-care routine falls apart when you run out of bath bombs, it’s time to dig a little deeper.

So, what is real self-care? It’s not about aesthetics or indulgence. It’s about keeping yourself grounded, nourished, and functioning across every part of your life – not just the ones that look good on Instagram.

Let’s get into the six pillars of real self-care, aka how to actually take care of yourself like you mean it.

The six pillars of real self-care

(I.e., what real self-care looks like in everyday life)

1. Physical self-care: you are more than a meat suit

  • Move your body (walk, stretch, dance, or all three at once)
  • Fuel it properly (real food > coffee and vibes)
  • Rest like it’s your job (because sometimes it is)
  • Treat it well (hydrate, moisturise, book that massage)

This is the part of real self-care that gets neglected when you treat exhaustion like a badge of honour. Don’t.

2. Emotional self-care: because bottling it up isn’t brave

  • Journal, vent, cry, scream into a pillow – whatever works
  • Say no and mean it
  • Let yourself feel joy, even if the world’s on fire
  • Therapy counts. Always.

Want to know what real self-care looks like in action? It’s allowing yourself to feel everything – without guilt.

3. Mental self-care: for when your brain needs a tune-up

  • Read something non-apocalyptic
  • Learn a new skill (or at least try)
  • Log off now and then (I see you, doomscrolling)
  • Call out your inner critic – she’s dramatic

Protecting your headspace like it’s sacred real estate is where the real self-care is at.

4. Social self-care: because memes ≠ meaningful connection

  • Hang out with people who don’t suck your soul dry
  • Set boundaries (because not everyone deserves VIP access)
  • Find your crew (IRL or online)
  • Choose depth over noise

Even introverts need people. Real self-care includes choosing the right ones.

5. Spiritual self-care: no incense required

  • Go outside and touch a tree (yes, really)
  • Reflect on what matters to you
  • Try mindfulness, prayer, or just sitting in silence
  • Gratitude rewires your brain (science, not fluff)

Find what grounds you – and make space for it.

6. Practical self-care: the unsexy stuff that keeps you together

  • Pay your bills (sigh)
  • Declutter your space (that junk drawer isn’t helping)
  • Prep for tomorrow (future-you is watching)
  • Do the thing you’ve been putting off (yes, that one)

This is the quiet MVP of real self-care. Not glamorous, but so necessary.

So, what is real self-care?

It’s not a one-size-fits-all checklist. It’s knowing what you need in this season of life and meeting yourself there. Some days, that might look like deep rest. Other days, it’s sorting your inbox or having a hard conversation you’ve been avoiding.

Real self-care isn’t selfish – it’s survival.

So go ahead – light the candle, run the bath, sip the tea. Just know that true self-care goes deeper than surface-level pampering. It’s about showing up for yourself, over and over again.
