Behold! The ten non-resolutions for 2026

And lo, as the calendar turned and the people proclaimed, “Behold! A new year! Become someone else immediately.”

But I say unto thee: no. There shall be no sudden reinvention, no frantic declarations, no rising at dawn to prove one’s worth.

Instead, enter the year with low expectations and high hopes, bearing not resolutions, but non-resolutions …
set forth not as law, but as gentle rebellion.

I. Thou shalt not reinvent thyself in the month of January.

January is a liminal state, not a transformation portal. Thou art allowed to arrive slowly.

II. Thou shalt not confuse urgency with importance.

That which is loud is not always holy. Some things may wait. Many things should.

III. Thou shalt not worship at the altar of Busyness.

For productivity is not a virtue, and exhaustion is not proof of worth.

IV. Thou shalt not apologise for rest.

Rest is not earned by suffering, nor revoked by unfinished to-do lists.

V. Thou shalt not adopt a morning routine that requireth a personality transplant.

If thou must become someone else to maintain it, cast it out.

VI. Thou shalt favour consistency over intensity.

For intensity burneth bright and dieth young. Consistency endureth.

VII. Thou shalt not romanticise burnout. Again.

If thou must recover from thy own ambition, it hath grown unruly.

VIII. Thou shalt abandon goals that demand self-betrayal.

If a goal requireth thee to abandon thyself, it is not a goal — it is a hostage situation.

IX. Thou shalt leave some things unfinished, without explanation.

Not all endings require a lesson. Some require only silence.

X. Thou shalt change thy mind without issuing a proclamation.

Growth needeth not a press release.

These are not rules, nor edicts, nor promises carved in stone. They are intentions, lightly held.

May thy year be steady rather than spectacular. May thy rest be unapologetic. May thy ambition be edited, not erased.

Go forth into the year without haste. Keep thy expectations low and thy hopes intact.

And remember: thou art allowed to change thy mind.
